Bamboo is a plant that belongs to the grass class. It is most abundant in monsoon area of East Asia. Bamboos are the grass that grow up to 100 feet i.e. 30 m. The most common bamboo is Bambusa. Mostly in cylindrical shape (rarely Square), bamboo is one of the environment friendly materials used in construction. Other than construction bamboo can be used for furniture, utensils, fiber, paper, fuel, and many more areas. Some bamboo types die after bearing fruit and some do not flower until they are 30 years old. According to a research over 1billion people around the world live in bamboo houses.
Advantages of constructing with bamboo:
One of the main advantages of building with bamboo is that it is a wonderful, natural and renewable resource, capable of rapid growth that can avoid future deforestation of our precious tropical rainforests.
It can Absorb energy and the higher bending ability makes it ideal material for seismic resistant builds.
Bamboo contains a chemical named silicic acid, which gives the shoot its durability and hardness.
The cylindrical and hollow feature of the bamboo makes it a light building material, which is easy to handle, transport and store.
In each of its nodes, bamboo has a dividing or transverse wall that maintains strength and allows bending thus preventing rupturing when bent. Because of this fantastic characteristic a bamboo construction offers superior earthquake-resistance.
Bamboo doesn’t require professional tools to work with. It can be handeled easily with simple tools like a machete.
Besides structural uses, Bamboo can also be used for flooring, wall paneling, water pipes, drainage, and furniture.
It can also be used along with other building materials, like reinforcing materials for foundations.
Due to all these reasons The Earthkind Cottages were constructed using bamboo as its foundation.
